The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system is undergoing significant updates, and shippers need to prepare now to minimize the impact on their operations. While the official list of proposed changes will not be available until January 30, 2025, proactive planning is essential to stay ahead of potential cost and classification challenges.
What’s Changing?
The NMFTA (National Motor Freight Traffic Association) has announced plans to streamline and modernize the NMFC system. Here’s what we know so far:
Condensed Classifications: Approximately 5,000 single-class NMFC items (with no liability, stowability, or handling concerns) will be consolidated into density-based NMFC numbers.
Expanded Density Scale: Two new subclasses (12 and 13) will be added to the current 11 density-based scale, allowing for lower freight classes on items with a density of at least 35 pounds per cubic foot.
These changes aim to simplify the classification process and create more equitable pricing structures based on density.
How Will the New NMFC Regulations Impact Your Business?
To ensure compliance and cost efficiency under the new rules, shippers will need to adapt their processes. Key considerations include:
Mandatory Dimensions Entry: Entering accurate dimensions during the shipment booking process will become critical, if not mandatory.
Product Dimension Tracking: Implementing systems to capture product dimensions prior to booking shipments will be essential.
TMS Updates: If you utilize a 3PL or Transportation Management System (TMS), your product catalogs will likely need updates to align with the new classifications.
What’s the Timeline?
Here are the critical dates to keep in mind:
January 30, 2025: The NMFTA will release the proposed changes as part of Docket 2025-1.
March 3, 2025: The Freight Classification Development Council (FCDC) will hold a public meeting to review and discuss the proposed changes.
May 3, 2025: Approved changes will go into effect.
